The office of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), recently released a revised Form I-9.
The new form includes mandatory changes to the List of Acceptable Documents, as well as other substantive changes.
According to a notice publihed in the Federal Register, employers must begin using the new form by 12/26/07.
Employers are responsible for the completion and retention of Forms I-9 for all employees, regardless of citizenship or national origin, hired for employment in the United States.
Additionally Employers must retain the I-9 form of each employee either for three (3) years after the date of hire or for one (1) year after employment is terminated, whichever is later. All current employees, therefore, must have I-9s on file with the employer.
